What was antique Victorian furniture worth back in the 60s — or was it antique then?

I came across an article called “Shall we go antiquing,” which appeared in the Daily Gleaner out of Eastern Canada. The author’s name is Lori Gallagher.

The article focuses primarily on a collector named Katrina DeWitt, who first started buying antiques in the 60s. She notes that Victorian furniture wasn’t even considered antique back then, and you could get it for a song.

For those of you who are lamenting the recent decline in market value of antique Victorian furniture, realize that its rapid rise was a recent phenomenon. It was probably ready for an adjustment regardless of the economy. Not too likely that it will ever get back to the prices of the 60s, is it? I don’t think there are too many people out there who would question its status as antique anymore.

What was Belter going for in the 60s? Victorian furniture is the real deal. Let’s just keep our eye on it and maybe we’ll catch another wave.
